‘How Innovation Works’: Q&A and Book Talk with Dr. Matt Ridley

Innovation: the reason for Dr. Matt Ridley’s optimism about the future of mankind despite the traumatic events of 2020. He believes that this collaborative, bottom-up process will only continue to prosper as it has in the last three hundred years, bringing about essential change for the development of our society. 

‘How Innovation Works: And Why It Flourishes In Freedom’ was the latest in our series of discussions featuring Dr. Matt Ridley ( renowned author, journalist, and businessman) as the speaker and  Deane Jayamanne (a member of the Nightwatchman Society) as the moderator on the 25th of November 2020.

This Book Talk and Q&A covered a diverse array of topics ranging from the role of the individual in innovation to ‘The Infinite Probability Drive’, where Dr. Ridley was able to deliver his unique perspective on the nature and implications of innovation in the 21st Century.

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Matt Ridley’s books have sold over a million copies, been translated into 31 languages, and won several awards. His books include The Red Queen, Genome, The Rational Optimist, and The Evolution of Everything. His book on “How Innovation Works” was published in 2020.

He joined the House of Lords in February 2013 and has served on the Science and Technology and the Artificial intelligence select committees. Dr. Ridley was also the founding chairman of the International Centre for Life in Newcastle. He created the Mind and Matter column in the Wall Street Journal in 2010 and was a columnist for the Times 2013-2018.

He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
