This event marked a lot of firsts for the Nightwatchman Society: it was the first ever online event hosted by our platform, the first panel discussion and the first time we had a session that was conducted in Sinhala.
The online discussion featured Prof. Premechandra Athukorala (Professor of Economics, ANU), Prof. Rohan Samarajiva (Chair, LIRNEasia), Subhashini Abeysinghe (Research Director, Verite Research) and Dr. Sarath Rajapatirana (Chair – Academic Program, Advocata Institute) as panelists and the session was moderated by Dhananath Fernando (COO, Advocata Institute).
The talk examined what Sri Lanka’s economic future should be post COVID 19; the merits and potential effects of inward-looking policies vs outward-looking ones. The panelists entertained various questions that covered their views on exporting within global production networks, import controls, the nature of local production, the future of Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector post Covid-19 and more.
